Online Yellow Pages Business Listings
Online Yellow Pages are, quite simply, online phone book directories.  Also referred to as Internet Yellow Pages (IYP) they are typically category driven and return listings only when the search contains a "what" and "where".  Because these sites are focused on providing local information, independent research shows that users are more qualified and ready to buy.  Just like the print phone books, business listings provided are in your local area.

Why Include Online / Internet Yellow Pages (IYP) in Your Marketing Strategy?

  • Conversion Rate
  • Target consumers during the buying stage
  • Localized Results
  • Organic Benefits - The publishers have built their sites to be crawled by search engine spiders so that they are often indexed organically on Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask, AOL and other sites
  • Partnerships - As an example, data you find on Yahoo Yellow Pages is fed directly from Yellowpages.com.  So when you place an ad on Yellowpages.com, you are also are receiving benefits and traffic from their partner sites.  As you can see from the chart to the right, Yellowpages.com has nearly a 40% market share nationally because of their partnerships with Yahoo.  Same thing with Superpages.com - they are the data feed for sites like Switchboard.com.
  • Mobile Marketing Benefits - Many sites are now formatting their information for mobile use.  As mobile search grows, the online directories may become even more important.

It is vital that every business has a profile page on each of these major IYP sites.  Most of the publishers offer a basic business profile at no cost.  The free listings are indexed at the end of the category below the paid listings and are organized in alphabetical order.  You also should know that these free business profile pages have been designed so that search engine crawlers or spiders can read the information you submit and index it for related searches on the search engine result pages (SERPs).  Most profile pages include basic fields such as your company contact information (business name, address, phone, fax, email, website URL), a business description, products, services and brands offered along with hours of operation, forms of payment accepted, accreditations, affiliations and more.  Take advantage of their free listing offerings.  For a list of links to sign up for free listings on each of the major IYP sites, visit our Research and Resources page.

That said, the only way to guarantee top position on the Internet Yellow Page sites are through paid inclusion or buying an ad.  Each site varies in the products and position offered.  Click here to download a free IYP 101 booklet with a visual of each site's product offerings, market areas you can purchase, how the listings are organized and what type of contract terms are available.

How Do People Find Online Yellow Page Sites?  Many consumers have them bookmarked or set as a favorite.  Or, as a test, go to Google and enter a search term with your city, state.  Most of the time, Google and Yahoo show major internet yellow pages sites on the first page of results.   Depending on what region you are in is which site shows most often.  For example, in Florida where BellSouth (now AT&T) is the primary utility telephone company Yellowpages.com has the highest market share.  But in Washington State where Dex (Qwest) publishes the phone books
DexKnows.com has a significant market share.  See below for each site's national market share and most recent traffic report.
